Formula One

Formula One

The first Formula One World Championship was held in 1950 and won by an Italian, Giuseppe Farina, driving an Alfa Romeo. In the 1950s, cars built by Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, and Maserati dominated the races. Since 1983, car manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Renault, and Ford have been the largest engine suppliers of vehicles in the industry.

In the first season of Formula One Championships, seven races were held between late Spring and early Autumn in Europe. Since 1980, the number has stayed between 16 and 19 races per season. In 1980, Desire Wilson from South Africa, driving a Wolf WR3 became the only woman to win a Formula One race at Brands Hatch, Kent, England.

Traditionally Europe has been the center of Grand Prix racing, but as the popularity of the sport grows, the events are being held worldwide. Half the races are held outside of Europe and the Americas in countries such as Bahrain, China, Turkey, and Malaysia.
