English Premiership
Rugby
English Premiership rugby has been played since 1987 as a competition for rugby union football clubs in the top division of the English rugby system. There are 12 clubs in the Premiership. Leicester Tigers won the first year's championship. Before the league's inception, there were fears that having rugby leagues would lead to greater violence on the field, but that proved to be an unfounded concern, and the Premiership became a success. The league turned professional for the 1996/97 season. In 1997, Wasps FRC joined Bath and Leicester as the only teams to win a final in the league's first decade. | Season | League Table Winners | Premiership Final Winners |
