Unemployment Rate
Unemployed persons as a share of the total active
population
The UK unemployment rate comprises all unemployed adults ages 15-74 living in the United Kingdom who want to work, are available to work, and are actively seeking employment. The official estimates of unemployment were produced by the Office of National Statistics. ONS conducts their surveys based on the International Labour Organization standards, facilitating comparisons between the United Kingdom and other countries. The unemployment rate in the United Kingdom dropped from 7.9% in 1996 to 5.3% in 2007.
